The Similan Islands are rightfully called the most beautiful islands near Phuket. They rank among the top 10 diving spots in the world, thanks to their unique water clarity (visibility up to 50 meters!), rich and diverse marine life, and pristine white-sand beaches.
Important: This excursion is not suitable for everyone. Please note that the journey to the Similan Islands can be quite tiring. The one-way speedboat ride takes about 1 hour 20 minutes from Taplamu Pier or 2 hours 10 minutes from Sarasin Pier, crossing open sea. On days with waves, the trip may take even longer. The transfer to the pier itself takes approximately 1.5–3 hours one way, depending on your hotel location. The return transfer may be longer due to evening traffic.
Warning: In October, there may still be waves at the Similan Islands. As a result, some days it might be impossible to land on the beach of Island #8 (home to the famous Sail Rock viewpoint). Additionally, after rain, the Sail Rock viewpoint may be closed by national park rangers for safety reasons without prior notice.
The Similan Islands are an archipelago of 9 islands, located 80 kilometers northwest of Phuket. Since October 2018, the national park has limited daily visitors to 3,325 people (compared to 6,000–7,000 in the 2017–2018 season). These islands offer the highest chance of encountering sea turtles in their natural habitat.
The Similans are formed from massive granite boulders, sheltering picturesque coves with unbelievably white sand—unlike any other islands near Phuket. On a sunny day, the sand is so bright and fine (like powdered starch) that it can dazzle you if you forget sunglasses.
National Park Closure: The Similan Islands are closed annually from May 15 to October 15 due to extreme monsoon waves (which, ironically, help shape these stunning beaches). All 9 islands are uninhabited, though Islands #4 (Ko Miang) and #8 (Ko Similan) have national park ranger stations. Since October 2018, tents and bungalows have been removed, so overnight tours now only offer air-conditioned cabins on liveaboard boats.
Every corner of the Similans feels like a Bounty ad come to life—a true paradise you won’t want to leave!
